Living up to this blog's title

Today I will be brave enough to read through a whole Org Chem book.

Yes.

It's about time I do something that really requires guts from this soldier. Cue epic "She's going hardcore" background music.

Inspiration

X years ago I saw a postcard featuring Dr. Fe del Mundo, and I remember telling myself that she was going to be one of the biggest reasons I'm entering this field. Here she is!

Role Model! Dr. Fe del Mundo
fuileachd:

This woman walked in Harvard in 1936. And survived the testosterone infested Ivy League.

[Del Mundo] humorously relates that when she arrived in Boston and went to the dormitory assigned her in a letter from the director of the hospital housing, much to her surprise she found herself in a men’s dorm. Unknowingly the Harvard officials had admitted a female to their all-male student body. But because her record was so strong the head of the pediatrics department saw no reason not to accept her. Thus, upsetting Harvard tradition, she became the first Philippine woman and the only female at the time to be enrolled at the Harvard Medical School.
—- Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation biography

Harvard began admitting female students in 1945, nine years after del Mundo was enrolled in the school. It took nine whole years for Harvard to realize women have brains that work. They must’ve considered her a fluke in the evolution of man until they couldn’t deny it anymore.
She CAME BACK to the Philippines when any sane person would’ve stayed in the United States, First World country.
She joined the International RedCross.
She set up a makeshift hospice, which the Japanese authorities (after the invasion, during the war) later closed down.
She later headed a children’s hospital, which was converted into a full-care medical center to cope with the casualties of war (WW2)
“Frustrated by the bureaucratic constraints in working for a government hospital, del Mundo had desired to establish her own pediatric hospital.”
She sold her home and personal effects to build a hospital.
She founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines
She lived in the hospital.
She still lives there, rising daily at five in the morning and continuing to make her daily rounds despite being WHEELCHAIR-BOUND and 99 years old.
She designed an incubator made out of bamboo for use in rural communities without electrical power.

Dr. Fe del Mundo was the first woman ever admitted to Harvard Medical School.

It's V Day!

Hello you,

I'm not even sure if you want to read this. Haha. I just wanted to send my thoughts into the vast emptiness of cyberspace, maybe then they'll collide with yours. And then maybe the universe will realize it needs to conspire to bring you happiness, because I believe you're awesome enough for it.

I hope you're doing great, whatever it is you might be doing. I hope the world isn't being too hard on you. I hope you still find the time to laugh at the small things, even the big ones. I hope you still believe in cloudless starry nights, extended summer vacations, and Archie x Betty. I hope school isn't killing you, and if it is I hope it's doing a terrible job. I hope you're eating three square meals a day (or maybe five squiggly ones), and your bed still calls to you after a hard day.

I hope you still find the good in everything that unfolds before you. I hope you're not on a drinking binge because your crush is the densest being in the universe (read: do not Grantaire). I hope you're not spending precious minutes worrying over what to do next with your life because honestly, you can't figure it out; it just comes. I hope you still like: a) milk with your Oreos, b) Tekken (or Metal Slug, or N4S, or any other oldskool game on the console), c) big-time daydreaming. I don't think we can survive this cruel world without all of the above.

I hope you never feel too scared, or alone, or unloved. I hope you brave each day with your wonderful smile and your awesome fighting spirit. I hope your love for chocolate does not manifest itself through your thighs. I hope you get the last ice cream scoop, pizza slice, or chicken drumstick. I hope you never grow old inside.

There are so many good things I want for you, and so much more awesomeness I cannot think up that you totally deserve. I want you never to forget that.
I just have so many feels, and this mighty ramble is all my cowardly self can manage. I'm just not Marius enough, sadly. Maybe (hopefully) one of these days I will be, and then you can expect this big, epic ensemble number from me and Les Amis. Until then I guess it's enough for me to hold these weetol thoughts close. I hope by the time I finish producing my epic ensemble number it won't be too late.

but I do!
